Machine Learning and Its Usage in Community Colleges
Author: Harrison Smith | Source: M.S. Coursework - Intro to Artificial Intelligence | Date: April 2025
Abstract: This paper explores the potential applications and implications of Machine Learning (ML) within the context of community colleges and workforce training programs. It provides a brief overview of Artificial Intelligence (AI) subsets and introduces ML as a multidisciplinary field with historical roots dating back to the 1940s, highlighting recent advancements that have brought it to public attention. The paper outlines key ML types, including supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised, and reinforcement learning, explaining the concept of human intervention in training data. Potential ML use cases in community colleges are discussed, such as predicting student success for early intervention, creating tailored learning paths, improving retention rates, and aligning curricula with labor market needs through Natural Language Processing (NLP) analysis of job postings and student skills. The paper also addresses significant ethical considerations, including data privacy, security risks associated with handling sensitive student data, and the potential for bias in ML algorithms leading to discriminatory outcomes.
